I traveled all around Southeast Asia in 2 months (including traveling in Thailand, a couple of flights, visa fees for Laos and Vietnam, and a week in Singapore) with about $3000-$4000 for myself. Since you won't be doing all of this, you can probably do more with less. I had a really great time, didn't have to skimp too much on the party scene or the cultural scene, and even got some great souvenirs out of the deal.

I also didn't pay for accommodation at all and ate a lot of cheap food. The best places to eat are the small places in rooms that look like little garages. You pay like 30 Baht for a meal and it is as delicious as love on giant plate (and just as filling, too).
References :
Here are a bunch more tips on saving money while traveling (I'm linking to the most useful page in my opinion... some of the items are obvious to many--not all, but yeah haha--but you might be able to find some tips that could help ;)

Another thing to consider beside how long your money will last (~3 - 4 months) is how long your visa allows you to stay in Thailand, if you have tourist visa you will only be allowed to stay 90 days within a 180 day period; and you will have to make visa runs to Cambodia or Laos in that 90 day time frame.

If you take it easy, you can live there for 4 - 5 months. That should be enough to rent a cheap condo or stay in a budget hotel, or basic room, food (from markets / street vendors), transport (bus and train) and a little for the essential items and some basic luxuries, such as a massage, hair cut, etc. If you want to live like a king and do everything, that will last you one month. You will need to be very disciplined if you want to stay for more than 3 months.
References :
You can get a hotel in Pattaya for around 500 baht per night that has air, hot water, private toilet/shower, cable TV and maid service. Food another 150-250 per day depending on your eating style. So, convert that to Canadian $ and see what that works out to. The left over money if for fun and games, etc.

You do know that you have limits on how long you can holiday in Thailand - right?

Figure out how much per night you can afford for a hotel room and then adjust your time in Thailand to allow for food, transportation and entertainment - then go home when the money runs out!

Helpful travel forums you can look over:

Forget hostels, hotels are just as cheap.

If you take a room on a monthly basis you can get a decent one for 200 - 300 Canadian a month easily.

Whatever you do don't marry a Thai, that is for fools.
References :
How long is a piece of string?

It depends on how much you spend. Booze and smokes are the most expensive and so can be accommodation. If you don't drink, smoke, spend money on women or on expensive accommodation it can last a while.

I know people who live on 10000 Baht a month and I know people who need 150000 a month.

Apartments can be rented cheap. Eating Thai food is about 30 baht a meal. Water is 1 Baht per liter when you buy it like Thais do.

Sop it depends on how much you spend.
References :
Cost of Living

4 months if you really live on the cheap side, 4 weeks if you live a little on the wild side, like the average tourist who comes here to visit the country and culture and the beaches.
